Horizon’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB) Council was established in 2014 to develop, implement and promote its cultural philosophies in treatment, among staff and within the community. Throughout the years, the Council has passionately worked toward bringing forth additional resources, best practices, approaches, and training for everyone at Horizon and our community. To recognize and best understand the work of the Council, we will continue to highlight Council members through our “Share Your Service” features – let’s get to know Cassie!
Q&A with Cassie
Why did you choose Horizon?
After graduate school, I had moved to Buffalo and saw an advertisement for a Clinical Open House at Horizon. I spent some time researching the agency, and when I saw that it had been voted a Best Place to Work in NYS, I knew it was the type of place I wanted to start my career at.
What is your role at Horizon and what does a typical day look like for you?
I’m a Clinical Supervisor for Horizon’s Intake Team and also supervise our Clinical Attendings as a part of Horizon’s Residency Program. A typical day involves seeing 1-2 patients, providing weekly supervisions to my staff, facilitating team meetings, and observing sessions with clinicians to provide in-the-moment support and on-the-job feedback.
What inspired you to join Horizon’s DEIB Council?
I was inspired to join the Council after hearing a colleague share about their experiences as a member. I wasn’t doing clinical work at the time and felt it was a way to use my clinical skills to give back to the company and our mission on a larger scale.
I’ve served on the DEIB Council for 2 years and currently sit on the Clinical subcommittee.
What is one aspect of Horizon’s Stronger Together Culture that you value most?
Our company culture is part of what I love most about Horizon. It contributes greatly not only to our staff retention but also to the patient experience. I appreciate that as an agency we strive to be best-in-class as a place to work and receive care, but also recognize that we are stronger together and there is always room to grow and improve. The most meaningful change comes when we work together as a group.
What gives you a sense of belonging at Horizon?
Horizon has doubled in size (if not more!) since I started working here in 2009 as a Counselor, but has never lost that “small town” feel for me. I have been lucky to work on several different teams throughout my career at Horizon and the commitment of each of those teams to our mission is powerful and inspiring – it’s what keeps me coming back to work each day!
