Mental health impacts everyone. As we approach the holiday season, it is our goal to remind our community to prioritize their mental health. Horizon recognizes the impact the holiday season can have on one’s behavioral health. November is Men’s Health Awareness Month, an acknowledgement of the health concerns men face, and the importance of encouraging men to seek support for their physical and mental health.
Nick Revelas from the Revelas Family Foundation and Joe Konze of Douglas Development are two individuals who have experienced and witnessed mental health challenges firsthand. As we near their annual event, A Not So Silent Night, we wanted to learn more about their personal missions to support those facing mental health and substance use disorders.
Why have you become an advocate for mental health?
“When I was in high school, I didn’t know about mental health, suicide, and all the warning signs you were supposed to know. When we lost our friend Devin Waring, our entire friend group was shocked, and our community was looking for answers. My sole focus became how do I help those that are struggling, and what do we do to get the message out about mental health. I have been able to accomplish a lot over the last few years with the help of my family and friends, and if we even help one person that is struggling, then it is all worth it.” – Nick
“I’ve become an advocate for mental health because I’ve seen firsthand how it can profoundly impact individuals and their loved ones. My own experiences and those of people close to me have highlighted the stigma surrounding mental health issues and the need for open conversations. Advocacy allows me to contribute to breaking down that stigma, raising awareness, and fostering a more supportive environment where everyone feels empowered to seek help.” – Joe

What drives you to help others in their mental health and substance use journeys?
“My personal mission is to create a space where people feel safe to share their struggles and experiences. I aim to educate others about the importance of mental health and substance use awareness, offering resources and support systems that promote recovery and resilience. By sharing my journey and insights, I hope to inspire others to prioritize their mental health and seek the help they need.” – Joe
Why has it been important for you to highlight mental health with your friends and families?
“Since a young age, I have felt passionate about bringing people together. I think it is imperative when talking on the issue of mental health, that I create a fun and positive atmosphere that the community would want to get involved in. Any event I plan is a great time to connect with those you haven’t seen in a while, and at the same time, you are learning and hearing a powerful message.” – Nick
Why is it important to bring the community together to talk about mental health/substance use? Why are education and awareness important for teens, young adults and our community?
“I think the money my family and I have been able to raise is great, but what makes me want to continue the work we do is the awareness we have brought to this issue. Being able to educate young adults and their families on the issue of mental health and breaking the stigma that surrounds it is why events like A Not So Silent Night are so important. So many people in Western New York are struggling, so what better way to take on mental health than throwing a holiday party.” – Nick
We are grateful for the support of Douglas Development at this year’s A Not So Silent Night event. Why is this an event you have chosen to support?
“I’ve chosen to support this event because it aligns perfectly with my commitment to mental health advocacy. Douglas Development’s focus on community engagement resonates with my belief in the power of collaboration. Supporting events that promote awareness and provide resources is essential in fostering a healthier community, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of that mission.” -Joe
If you know someone who may be hesitant to reach out for help or support, what would you want them to know?
“I would want them to know that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, and there are people and resources available to support you. You don’t have to go through this alone — there are many who care and want to help you find the path to healing. Taking that first step can be difficult, but it can lead to profound change.” – Joe
Largely we have found men don’t talk about the help they need or support they are looking for. Why do you think it is important to reach out for help?
“I think as a young man, a lot are told growing up to be strong, not show weakness, and not really think about feelings. But over the last few years we have helped raise awareness about that there are so many great resources out there if you are struggling. The great part about the Teen Mental Health Program at Horizon is that it works directly with schools and reinforces the important message about seeking health. It’s important to reach out if you are struggling, or someone you know may be struggling, because you never know whose life you could be saving.” – Nick
“It’s crucial for men to reach out. Societal norms often discourage vulnerability, which can lead to a cycle of silence and suffering. By speaking up and seeking help, men can challenge these stereotypes and promote a healthier model of masculinity. Opening up not only helps them heal, but also sets an example for others and encourages a culture where emotional well-being is prioritized and normalized. Reaching out can save lives and foster deeper connections with others.” – Joe
