Grow With Us: Meet Rob!

Grow With UsMeet Rob! Rob was hired as an Administrative Assistant at Horizon’s Niagara Falls Boulevard Recovery Center in August of 2018. Since his start at Horizon five years ago, Rob has developed into the role of Practice Manager at the Boulevard. Read below to find out more about Rob’s journey since he started his career at Horizon, and his hopes for his future!

What kinds of trainings/ad hoc committees/workgroups have you been a part of that have supported your growth?

I’ve had the opportunity these past five years to explore different trainings and professional development experiences. For instance, I participated in Horizon’s Emerging Leaders program, and then was able to later return as a guest speaker on behalf of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Council. I’ve been an active member of the DEIB Council for about 3 years; helping to table, volunteer, attend trainings/workgroups, and more. During my first year as a Practice Manager, I also completed the Bronze Level Leadership program. All these opportunities have helped me grow personally and professionally.

Can you speak to the mentorship relationships you’ve developed over the years and how these have helped you grow as a leader?

I have come to know several mentors during my time at Horizon with my first major mentor being Jen, an Administrative Assistant at Horizon’s Boulevard location. She taught me so much during my initial training as an Administrative Assistant and she continues to teach and remind me of things almost five years later as one of the most valuable members of my team.

I’ve also learned so much from Julie, who previously served as the Practice Manager at the Boulevard. As her Team Lead, I was able to observe many of the daily tasks of a Practice Manager, become more familiar with navigating the managerial side of an outpatient clinic, and boost my overall confidence as a leader.

In addition, I would like to thank my supervisors Michelle and Sarah who not only provide guidance and support, but also encourage me to keep striving for more.

I continue to learn daily from the other Practice Managers, Program Directors, and Managers. I enjoy getting to know everyone and collaborating when possible!

Do you have any goals for further growth within your role at Horizon?

I’m always looking for trainings, workgroups, and networking opportunities, both at Horizon and out in the community. I’d like to continue to develop my skills as a Practice Manager, share my experiences, and help guide other Horizon employees by being a mentor myself. I’d also love to participate as a facilitator for trainings, especially focusing on the topic of understanding workplace/compassion fatigue, as it’s something I’m very passionate about.

What would you say to someone who may be interested in growing in their career with Horizon?

Don’t hesitate. There’s so many opportunities to grow within Horizon, both personally and professionally. I knew almost right away that Horizon was where I wanted to be, and five years later, I still feel that way every day!
