Horizon’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB) Council was established in 2014 to develop, implement and promote its cultural philosophies in treatment, among staff and within the community. Throughout the years, the Council has passionately worked toward bringing forth additional resources, best practices, approaches, and training for everyone at Horizon and our community as a whole. In order to recognize and best understand the work of the Council, we decided to highlight Council members through “Share Your Service” features – let’s get to know Robert!
FAQ with Robert
Why did you choose Horizon?
While studying Non-Profit Management at Buffalo State College, I decided that I wanted to work for a company that not only was a non-profit, but also wanted to work for a company that would allow me to help others. The behavioral health field seemed like the best fit for me, and I ended up at Horizon!
What is your role at Horizon?
I am currently the Administrative Team Lead at the 1370 Niagara Falls Boulevard outpatient location. In addition to my daily responsibilities, I am also a HEART coach, DEIB Council member, and currently participating in Emerging Leaders.
How long have you worked at Horizon?
My three year anniversary occurred this past August 2021, and I am looking forward to many more years!
What does a typical day look like for you?
The best part about Horizon is that no day is the same! Working as an administrative support staff is a busy, but fulfilling role that I look forward to each day. I work with the Practice Manager and other support staff to fulfill the needs of patients, clinicians, and providers, both virtually and in person.
How long have you served on the DEIB Council and which subcommittees are you in?
I joined the DEIB Council at the start of 2021 and currently participate in the Workforce Development and Community subcommittees.
What inspired you to join the Council?
I am a firm believer that everyone deserves the chance to be heard and represented. I love to help others and provide support, and because of this, I felt called to joining the Council. It gives me the opportunity to support and learn more about others in the company as well as engaging in the community.
What is one aspect of Horizon’s Stronger Together Culture that you value most?
Horizon follows through with the aspect of togetherness and it means so much. Knowing that there is always support available, no matter the reason, is really special and not something you can find with every employer. Opportunities are available for everyone in the company, regardless of position. The encouragement within the company to embrace those opportunities is fantastic. Since starting at Horizon, there has not been one day here that I ever felt alone.
What gives you a sense of belonging at Horizon?
I feel like I have belonged at Horizon since before being hired. I remember my observation at the Boulevard location and how comfortable the staff made me feel as I asked questions about something completely new to me. Since being hired, I have discovered that everyone I speak with and work with are so willing to help and provide support when needed. To know that we have such a wide range of life experiences working under one roof and the willingness to share that experience makes coming into work each day enjoyable.
