Recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the prevalence of domestic violence and recognize the survivors. October was first named National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in 1989 and aims to raise awareness around the impact domestic violence has on families, communities, and individuals.

As an organization focused on raising mental health awareness and providing support to those struggling in our community, Horizon recognizes the impact domestic violence can have on the mental health of individuals and their loved ones.

How to Acknowledge Domestic Violence Awareness Month:

  • Share the NYS Domestic and Sexual Violence Hotline – Call 800.942.6909, Text 844.997.2121, or chat at opdv.ny.gov.
  • Purple Thursday – wear purple on Thursday, October 17, 2024 in support of those who have experienced domestic violence.
  • Share information and stories on Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Did You Know?

  • Domestic Violence affects about 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men.
  • On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
  • On average, it takes someone 7 tries to leave an abusive relationship.
  • Within a 60-minute timeframe, more than 1,440 people are affected by intimate partner violence. This number is predicted to be low due to domestic violence going unreported.

Horizon’s Pine Avenue Recovery Center is starting a Domestic Violence Women’s Group in November 2024. The group provides a safe space for survivors to gain support. We believe that all those impacted by domestic violence deserve a safe space to share stories, express emotions, and gain support from others.

If you or a loved one has experienced domestic violence, Horizon is here to help. Call our team today at 716-831-1800 to learn more about services and to schedule an appointment with our trained professionals.
