CBS Sunday Morning recently featured a short video that sheds some light on an important community issue — the resurgence of heroin use amongst teens and young adults in the suburbs.
Heroin is making a come back with a vengeance. Its reach is spreading into suburban communities across America. In a recent survey, 24% of high school students have admitted to abusing highly addictive medications including prescription pain killers such as oxycontin and hydrocodone. This is a 33% increase in just 5 years.
So how does Rx drug use lead to heroin abuse? One reason is because pain killers are expensive — they can cost up to $80 per pill. Young people are turning to the cheaper and more powerful alternative — herion, which costs about $10/bag.
The video features the suburban town of Naperville, IL. But the issue is not unique to Naperville. We’re seeing this issue in many suburbs across the USA — including the suburbs of Buffalo, such as East Amherst, Orchard Park, Williamsville and Clarence.
