Grow With Us: Meet Zach!

Meet Zach! Zach began his Horizon career in 2021 as a Behavioral Health Assistant. At the time, he was pursuing his Bachelor’s degree until he grew into the role of Associate Counselor at our Terrace House location in 2022. Continue reading to learn how he has developed in his career with Horizon!

What kinds of trainings/ad hoc committees/workgroups have you been a part of that have supported your growth?

Horizon University has been a wonderful resource to assist in shaping my clinical knowledge. I have completed trainings on DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Grief & Loss, Positive Psychology, Seeking Safety, and more.

I am also a part of Horizon’s Co-occurring Conditions workgroup, and it has been a project I feel very connected with. I have even expanded the group meetings across the organization from once a week to four times a week.

Can you speak to the mentorship relationships you’ve developed over the years and how these have helped you grow?

I have had multiple experiences and professional relationships throughout my journey at Horizon that have contributed to growing my career. During my clinical onboarding, the Program Director at the time, Elizabeth, was incredibly helpful. She assisted me in developing clinical authority while also prioritizing my self-care.

I also completed one of my Master of Social Work field placements through Horizon. Advanced Practice Clinician, Beata, provided me with weekly supervisions to guide me in providing a trauma-informed and human rights approach delivery.

I have also found my coaching with the Terrace House Medical Director, Joshua, has helped me improve my Motivational Interviewing skills so I can better implement them in an evidence-based manner.

All these mentorship relationships have been key to my development and growth in my career.

Do you have any goals for further growth within your role at Horizon?

I am hoping to move to a position as Clinical Supervisor or Program Director in the coming years, preferably at Terrace House. I have already been assisting new hires in their training to work toward this goal.

What would you say to someone who may be interested in growing in their career with Horizon?

Horizon provides many opportunities for career development and growth. I would recommend setting clear boundaries and maintaining self-care to avoid burnout. As healthcare professionals, we sometimes forget to practice self-care and give ourselves the recognition for the difficult, but lifesaving work we do every day.
