Meet Katie! Katie began her Horizon journey as in intern in 2012, before being hired for the Care Coordination Program when her internship ended in 2014. She worked as a Mental Health Clinician for a year, before returning to Care Coordination as a supervisor. Now as the Senior Program Director of Care Coordination, Katie shares all the ways in which she has grown with Horizon!
What kinds of trainings/ad hoc committees/workgroups have you been a part of that have supported your growth?
Throughout my time at Horizon, I have participated in many opportunities that have supported my growth. Currently, I participate in Culture Club, Program Director Collaboration meetings, different leadership series offered by Horizon, committees in Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and Erie County, and more. Throughout these different opportunities, I have grown as a leader. Being able to sit at a table with people from diverse backgrounds has helped me develop in my role. Currently, my job is very different from the other Program Directors’ roles at Horizon, but the company has created such a welcoming space for collaboration and growth that I have been able to learn a great deal from others despite the difference in our day to day.
Can you speak to the mentorship relationships you’ve developed over the years and how these have helped you grow as a leader?
I have always felt heard and valued at Horizon. Horizon invests in their teams and truly cares about their employees. I have had mentors over the years that I have felt inspired by and have impacted who I am as a person. These mentors created a safe space for me to be myself and work on the areas that I wanted to work on. Over the last 12 years, I have grown as a leader, professional, and person because of the mentors that I have had at Horizon.
Do you have any goals for further growth within your role at Horizon?
I want to continue to be a part of Horizon’s success in being a Best Place to Work in NYS (for 16 years consecutive years!) and the best place for patients to receive care.
What would you say to someone who may be interested in growing in their career with Horizon?
Growth takes time and work. Each day I show up to work with the goal to improve from the day before. My advice is to seek opportunities outside of your regular job duties and take the time to have conversations with others in the organization. For me, getting to where I am now required me to spend a lot of time outside of my comfort zone. Staying in my comfort zone would have certainly been easier, but growth doesn’t happen in our comfort zones. We must be willing to do hard things and have hard conversations for the greater good of our organization and community.
