Why is Mental Health Awareness Month Important?

As we continue to recognize Mental Health Awareness Month this May and all year round, we are here to remind you of the importance of managing and prioritizing your own mental well-being. This month, we asked our incredible team members to share about what Mental Health Awareness Month means to them. Check out their inspiring thoughts below!

What does Mental Health Awareness Month mean to you?

“Mental Health Awareness Month is a platform to remind people that mental health has an impact on everyone, some directly and some indirectly. Mental health isn’t some people’s problem. It’s not a ‘this group’ or ‘that group’ problem. It’s a human experience and it’s important we not only acknowledge that but also take action to support and be a resource for those around us.”

– Shacarah, Director of Health Equity and Impact

What would you tell someone who is hesitant to reach out for mental health support?

“I would let them know that it’s normal and okay to be nervous. Anticipatory anxiety is hard, but once you get through the door the first time it gets easier.”

– Hannah, Administrative Assistant

“Mental health can be an uncomfortable and private topic to talk about with friends and family. If you get support, you will be working with a trained counselor that will keep what you say confidential. You have control over what you work on in counseling. You’ll also learn that mental health support is more than talk therapy. You can get linked with a peer support, a provider who specializes in mental health, caseworkers, and other supports to address your needs.”

– Samantha, Senior Counselor II

How do you prioritize your mental health?

“I prioritize my mental health by acknowledging triggers and pausing when I feel myself possibly getting into a thought spiral. It isn’t fun, but allowing myself a moment to sit in the discomfort helps in the long run.”

– Kyle, Assistant Accounts Receivable Manager

Why are you passionate about working in the mental health field?

“I know what it is like to struggle with anxiety, depression, and trauma firsthand, and how life-changing healing through therapy can be. I feel privileged to be able to hold space for others, offer tools, reflection, and help – so that they can find their own way through their suffering and to a place of peace. I get excited to see someone working on themselves, and I feel honored they allow me to witness it.”

– Angela, Advanced Practice Clinician

“I am passionate about working in this field because I have struggled in the past with my mental health and still do at times. I want to be the support for others that I needed back then and serve as an example that it can get better. No one should have to fight alone.”

– Molly, Psychiatric Rehab Specialist
