Meet Robert! Robert began his journey with Horizon in October of 2015 as a Behavioral Health Assistant at the Horizon Village Campus. Now as a Senior Behavioral Health Assistant, Robert supports his patients on their recovery journeys as well as his fellow teammates daily. What kinds of trainings/ad hoc committees/workgroups have you been a part of that have supported your growth?
Horizon has provided many trainings in Mental Health, DBT, and other online courses that have supported my growth that have led to my success as a member of the team. Group supervisions and the opportunity they provide for colleagues to collaborate and grow together have also helped enhance my career journey.
Can you speak to the mentorship relationships you’ve developed over the years and how these have helped you grow?
During college, I received great mentorship from two of my college professors. One of them being a longtime friend and co-worker, and the other my professor in Diversity. From my Diversity professor, I learned that understanding the culture of the populations we work with is essential to earning their trust. Practicing this has contributed to my success with patients and in my career.
Also, weekly supervisions with my supervisor have helped me to grow through mentoring. My supervisions have helped me develop excellent communication skills with my co-workers as well as familiarized me with protocols in our facilities on the Horizon Village Campus.
Do you have any goals for further growth within your role at Horizon?
My goals are to continue learning and taking on new opportunities and challenges as they present themselves. I want to continue to represent Horizon well and be a good role model for our patients’ success.
Another goal of mine is to retire from my full-time position next year and continue my career with Horizon part-time.
What would you say to someone who may be interested in growing in their career with Horizon?
Horizon has been recognized as a Best Company to Work for in New York State for 16 consecutive years. There is so much growth potential here for someone starting out to develop their skills. Horizon has great flexible work schedules to help develop a healthy work-life balance. I wish that I would have started my career with Horizon a long time ago. It has been an exciting journey so far!
