Meet Kelly! Kelly started her career at Horizon in 2014 as an intern while she was in grad school. In 2015, she was hired as a Substance Use Counselor, and now works as a Program Director, where she oversees our Perinatal Mental Health Program. What is your “why” for working at Horizon?
I am a firm believer that you don’t end up in this field by accident. Growing up in a family that was impacted by addiction, I felt like I didn’t have anyone who understood or could relate to what I was going through. I knew that I wanted to help others feel heard, improve their lives, and repair relationships with loved ones and others that have been impacted by mental health or substance use.
What opportunities has Horizon provided you that have helped you grow in your career?
Horizon has provided me with the opportunity to take various clinical trainings to help grow and develop my skillset and the skillset of others. I have also been involved in ongoing leadership trainings to help further my advancement and provide opportunities for networking with others in the community.
How do you prioritize your well-being while also growing and developing in your career?
It’s all about finding a balance, which can look different for everyone at different times. I find that when I am intentional about practicing my own self-care (exercising, reading, spending time with friends/family, being in nature) then I can be more present for myself and for others. Being able to advocate for myself has been necessary for my well-being as well.
