From Stigma to Support: Building Better Systems for LGBTQIA+ People

LGBTQIA+ health awareness isn’t just about statistics, it’s about real people navigating real challenges. Continue reading to hear from Jack Kavanaugh, Executive Director of GLYS WNY, who shares about health and wellbeing as well as the unique challenges and needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Jack Kavanaugh

What health challenges do the LGBTQIA+ community face and what role does intersectionality play?

“LGBTQ+ individuals face higher rates of mental health issues, substance use, and barriers to accessing care. Stigma and discrimination often make it harder to seek help, especially for sexual health and gender-affirming care, but really for all healthcare needs. Intersectionality compounds these challenges—someone who is transgender and a person of color, for example, may face added layers of bias and discrimination, leading to even worse health outcomes.”

What are the impacts of discrimination and stigma on the health of LGBTQIA+ individuals?

“Stigma and discrimination create mental health strain, leading to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. Fear of judgment keeps many LGBTQ+ people from seeking care, which can lead to untreated health issues and worse long-term outcomes. Economic barriers like job discrimination also limit access to health insurance and consistent care and are exacerbated by issues like homelessness.”

How can healthcare providers create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ patients?

“Healthcare providers can make a big difference by using inclusive language, offering gender-neutral facilities, and training staff on LGBTQ+ issues. Respecting pronouns and collecting data on sexual orientation and gender identity helps providers offer better and more tailored care. Creating a judgment-free space where patients feel safe to be themselves is key. It’s often about just putting out little signals that show you are an affirming space.”

Can you highlight any innovative programs or initiatives that have successfully improved LGBTQIA+ health outcomes?

“Partnerships between organizations and healthcare providers have led to some meaningful improvements in LGBTQIA+ health. For example, we have a partnership with BestSelf to have a clinician work with our youth and have partnerships with Horizon as well to streamline referrals. GLYS works with mental health providers to train them on supporting LGBTQ+ youth in clinical settings. These collaborations help bridge gaps in care, increase access to knowledgeable providers, and create a more coordinated approach to LGBTQ+ health.”

What are some resources or organizations that provide support and health care services specifically for LGBTQIA+ individuals?

“There are some great resources available. Locally, I would include GLYS, Evergreen Health, the Pride Center, WNY Man Made Men, Indigo House, the Rainbow Collective, Rainbow Seniors, and Niagara Pride, among others. Nationally, the Trevor Project offers mental health support for LGBTQ+ youth, alongside organizations like PFLAG (including our local chapter) and the National Center for Transgender Equality also offer support and advocacy.”

GLYS WNY is a leader in our communities, supporting our young people and their families. We are honored to have them as community partners and thank them for all of the inspiring and meaningful work they do every day.
