Break the Silence on Domestic Violence

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the prevalence of domestic violence and recognize the survivors. Domestic Violence effects 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 4 men. Domestic violence can happen regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, race, or economic background.

Domestic violence doesn’t look the same in every situation because every relationship is different. There is a stigma that domestic violence only happens in intimate relationships, but this is untrue. Individuals involved in domestic violence don’t even have to necessarily live in the same household – domestic violence can involve anyone who is personally connected, such as family members, significant others, and friends.

As a behavioral health organization focused on providing support to our community, Horizon recognizes the impact domestic violence can have on the mental health of those involved.

Break the silence.

Domestic violence may cause silence and isolation. Break the silence by talking openly about it, promoting awareness, and creating a safe environment where survivors feel supported rather than judged. This reduces the shame, guilt, and fear that often prevent people from speaking out.

The distress hand signal is a universal sign to indicate a need for help. This hand signal has been widely used by domestic abuse victims to discreetly signal that they need assistance. The universal distress hand signal involves facing your palm outward with your thumb tucked into your palm, and your fingers closed over the thumb. If you notice someone using this hand signal – it indicates their need for help. By remaining aware of our surroundings and being willing to help, we can make our communities safer for everyone.
