Aging is a journey, and the goal is not just to endure it, but to embrace it—thriving rather than simply surviving. True wellness in later years means caring for both the mind and body, yet mental health is often overlooked among older adults. Many cite loss, health concerns, and changes in independence as significant challenges to their emotional well-being. But aging is more than its difficulties — it offers opportunities for growth, deeper connections, and discovering joy and purpose in new and meaningful ways.
May is Older Americans Month, a time to focus on the contributions of older Americans, as well as the perceptions of aging and the challenges these perceptions can have on mental wellbeing. This May and throughout the year, Horizon encourages everyone to prioritize their wellbeing and to embrace aging.
How can you prioritize your wellness in your aging journey?
Reduce isolation and increase social connections: Connect with older and younger generations. Even just one person can make all the difference.
Move in ways that work for you: It doesn’t have to be yoga or water aerobics classes every week; move your legs and arms even if you sit while doing it. Don’t forget to embrace rest and mindfulness too!
Don’t minimize the importance of treatment and using resources: Don’t be afraid to ask for help and use the resources you have, including your support people. If you can’t get to the resources, ask them to come to you – always feel empowered to advocate for accessible healthcare!
Normalize conversations about aging: Don’t be afraid to get older, and embrace talking about all the gaps and the gains in this lifelong process.
Wellness in aging is about creating balance. This balance should be normalized and aided with accessible resources for all. Regardless of your background, lifestyle, or resources, small and intentional choices can make aging a more fulfilling experience.
