Are Your Teenagers Struggling? SBIRT Can Help!

Did you know that over 50% of teenagers have misused a drug at least once?

Today, young individuals in our community face numerous pressures. Social media, peer pressure, traumatic experiences, and navigating difficult emotions all affect their mental well-being. As we continue to experience rising rates of vaping, cannabis, and use of other substances among adolescents and young adults, Horizon recognizes the importance of providing intervention in our community.

What is SBIRT?

SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders (SUD), as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders. These services can be provided directly in schools, Universities, as well as other community settings, and asses the risk of substance use with the individual.

Our SBIRT team consists of an SBIRT Project Director, Project Coordinator, SBIRT-specific counselors, a Case Manager, and a Parent and Family Liaison. The team works with the adolescent as well as parents/family as needed to assess the situation and provide support and understanding while working through the process.

Why is the SBIRT program important?

Early intervention can be key in preventing more severe substance use in adolescents. The screening can also be an opportunity to open dialogue about other impacts on a person’s life.

What makes someone appropriate for an SBIRT?
  • Any child or young adult, ages 10-25, reporting risky or early substance use and those at risk of developing a substance use disorder.
  • Individual has not been screened for substance use disorder by a health professional in the past 6 months.
  • Individuals in a pre-contemplative, contemplative, or preparation stage of change.
  • Youth that could benefit from concentrated nicotine, cannabis, other drug/alcohol or harm reduction psychoeducation.
What excludes someone from the SBIRT program?
  • Individual is already admitted into treatment and is receiving SUD treatment.
  • The youth is at high risk and is already recommended for substance use treatment.
