Prioritizing Your Mental Health Online

Did you know about 4.8 billion individuals use social media worldwide? This represents 59.9% of the global population, and about 92.7% of all internet users (Social Media Statistics Details – Undiscovered Maine – University of Maine). With so much of the global population having an online presence and consistent access to social media, it’s important to recognize the impact that can have on an individual’s mental well-being.

While social media can have an enormous positive impact – providing access to connections, information, and support – it can also have a negative effect. For example, studies show that social media often disrupts sleep, distracts from in-person priorities (i.e.: time spent with family/friends, work, homework, etc.), and sets unrealistic expectations around body image and lifestyle.

As a behavioral health organization, Horizon recognizes that these negative impacts can leave an impression on one’s mental well-being as well as their physical. If you feel that your social media usage may be impacting your well-being, see below for some tips on how to prioritize your health and practice healthy habits while online.

Tips for Protecting Your Mental Well-Being on Social Media
  • Unfollow or mute accounts that don’t serve you or your mental health – replace them with accounts focused on positivity or motivation.
  • Swap out social media apps with apps that promote healthy behaviors, meditation, or positivity.
  • Set social media boundaries:
    • Set timing restrictions on how long or how often you scroll.
    • Turn off push notifications for social media apps.
    • Take a social media hiatus! Take a break and try deleting the apps for a short period of time.
  • Rather than connecting online, focus on connecting with others in person – meet up with a friend, co-worker, or family member outside of social media.
  • Reach out and connect to help when needed.
